Illustrated Dictionary of British Churches - Mullion Definition

History and Architecture

Mullion

A vertical dividing strip, usually of stone, in a church window. Mullions divide the separate 'lights', or narrow vertical panels of glass, that make up the entire window. So, obviously, there are always one less mullion than there are lights in a window (i.e. a two light window will have one mullion up the middle, a three light window will have a pair of mullions, and so on).
